Yoga Photo Shoot for Esquea Yoga, Therapy & Fitness. Inc.

Last year I was hired by Esquea Yoga, Therapy & Fitness. Inc. to crate images for their marketing use. I started doing some research and I notice all the image out there look like stock photos and did not stand out.  I decided I wanted to make the images for Esquea Yoga edgy and dramatic so they would stand out in the crowd.

I wasn't going to go into the shoot with the client and start experimenting this edgy, dramatic idea, that I had no idea what it would look like.  So I set up a test shoot with a friend to see how the image would come out.  We did the test shoot and I felt the images did not work for a commercial form, so I changed my idea to crating strong bright life style shots and making the portraits of Cinthya (Easquea Yoga's owner),  the edgy and dramatic images.

For the photographer out there I used a 6 feet shoot through umbrella on the right as key and I bounced a strobe with a small reflector off of the ceiling as fill at about 1/3 of a stop less than the key.  For the  portraits I used the 6 foot through umbrella on the right as key, just out of frame and a strobe with a large reflector with a gridded on the background.

Over all the images came out great; they're eye catching, and stand out from the rest of the yoga images out there.  Below are a few image from the test shoot, that I played around with and I think just look cool.

Inked Magazine shoot with Kareem Black

Back in December I assisted Kareem Black on a shoot for Inked Magazine.  The shoot was to photographer two beautiful ladies in lingerie, show of their tattoos, and they wanted it in this room that was painted all red with a red carpet..  Finding the room wasn't the hard part, the magazine had already found one.  The tricky part was that the room was only seven feet by ten feet so the only things that fit in it was a red couch, a profoto light with a beauty dish on a c stand, the model, and Kareem.  But out side the door was the laptop were the images were coming into and about five other people checking on how the shoot was going.  To check out the article in the magazine and the other photos from the shoot click here.

Wilson Kelly Album

I did the design and photography for Wilson Kelly's next album.  I had an idea of both of these location and the exact lighting I wanted for a while but never had the right subject to be able to use them, so when Wilson called me up to make his HipHop album everything fell in to place.  I knew I wanted the inside and outside to be two page spreads and these locations fit in perfectly.  For the outside I lit him with strip box, about four feet away, high, and angled down for the front and a tight grid to add separation on his back.  On the inside I used the same lighting but there were far away just out of the shot.

Location shoot for Izulec Beauty Salon

In December I did a photo shoot for Izulec Beauty Salon, that consisted of a group shot of all the staff.  They wanted one image to put on Christmas cards to give out to clients.  There's a big field in Lincoln going to the Community College of Rhode Island that I have been wanting to use as a location for a long time about didn't know what a good subject would be for it.  So when I got this job I thought that location would be great for this shoot, big area for a large group and the tones of the trees and grass would like great with the blue outfits they wanted to wear.
I knew that I didn't just want them to be standing there so I got a table and chair set to pose them around to add some layers.  So about an hour before the subjects showed up I arrived to the field where I places the chairs and table where I wanted, placed a huge white sheet(20'x10') on a back drop stand that I was going to use to shoot strobes threw, and added a accent /hair light.  After metering all my lights I realized that I wasn't getting enough light from the to strobes firing threw the sheet, the accent /hair light wasn't going to do much, and I wasn't going to be able to over power the sun to nock out the back ground as much as I wanted too.  So I moved to the acsent /hair light behind the sheet to fire with the other two and got the look I wanted.  The lights I used were 3 White Lighting strobes; 2 X1600 and one X800.

Shoot of Larry Zimmerman for CFO Magazine with Brady Fontenot

Back in October I assisted Brady Fontenot on a assignments for CFO Magazine.  The job was in Connecticut where Brady had to photograph Larry Zimmerman, who is the CFO for Xerox.  After getting all the equipment in to the building Brady and I walked around scouting for location to shoot.  The building had tons of windows, so Brady had a few location to shoot at with just natural light and had two strobe set ups.  One down a hall way and the other in a large conference room.  Brady shot five different locations and the magazine choices to use the head shot we did in the conference room, that was the shot we worked on the most to get right.

No time? Just get it done. Shoot with Jennifer Esquilin.

A few months ago, before it got cold out and started snowing, I did a photo shoot in the streets of East Side Providence with the beautiful Jennifer Esquilin. We had put about four hours aside for the shoot but at the end of wardrobe, scouting and getting to the location, hair, and makeup we were left with about 30 minutes to shoot. On top of not haveing that much time, the day wasn't that nice and it was really windy. But in the long run we got some great shots.

Reconnecting with an old friend

About a month ago a very close friend of mine Johan, asked me to do a maternity shoot of his girlfriend.  Johan and I have been really close to each other since middle school but due to school and life we haven't really seen each other in about two years.  So when he asked me to do this shoot I was realy exicted for two reason; I would get to see my good friend and I would get to photographer the start of the life that hopefuly I will be a part of for the rest of my life.

After about a month of planing with Johan we finaly did the shoot, this was two weeks ago.  Lucky for me my other great friend from Hallmark, Hillary Dubie had came to Rhode Island to vistit me and was there to help me with the shoot.  Johan's girlfriend wanted the shoot to be low key which was great because I love low key and had an idea of what I wanted to do.  On the shot of her by her self I used two grid spots on ether side of her, because I knew I wanted to rim light her to show her body.  I also used a strip box angeled down for her face and so the rest of the light from it to fall off and fill in the rest of her body.

They wanted to do the classic shot of the hands on the belly making a heart so I just used the same lighting.  I straighten the strip box out and brought it in closer to light the belly and hands and moved the two grid spots more to the front for separation.  The last shot was of them together, so I had her stand and Johan sit to work the frame space better.  As for lighting, I pointed a grid spot straight on to the front of Johans face, angled the strip box down again for her face and the fall off to land on Johans back, and a grid spot on the background for more separation.

I'm really happy with what I got and they are too, but the most important thing is that Johan picked me to take these images of his child before she's born and that there are images for her to look at for the rest of her life.
