Clean Central Falls - 4th Annual "Taking Pride in Our City" Earth Day Event

Earth day was 3 days ago and to celebrate it the City of Central Falls held their 4th Annual "Taking Pride in Our City" - Clean Central Falls Event on Saturday.  I have had the privilege to photograph 3 out of the 4 of these events the city has had and I'm always moved by how many people take time out of their personal lives to unit and help make Central Falls a cleaner place.

My favorite part of the event is at the end after everyone has finished cleaning, they all head back to the meeting point to return the gear; broom, rakes, gloves, etc, and as they return the items I have them step aside so I can crate a portrait of them.  Then I use the portraits to make a collage of the all participants.  This years collage is at the bottom of this posting and here is a link where you can see last years blog posting with the 2013 collage.

This year there was over 150 volunteers.

A lot of local businesses help donate the materials needed for the event; also the city and recreation department was awarded a $1,000 grant to help cover expenses.
This is DJ Max Major's 4th year donating his time and equipment.
Central Falls Park and Recreation Director, Joshua Giraldo.
Central Falls Firefighter talk to the volunteers about staying safe while they clean.
City of Central Falls Mayor James A. Diossa thanks the crowd for their help.

Yoga Photo Shoot for Esquea Yoga, Therapy & Fitness. Inc.

Last year I was hired by Esquea Yoga, Therapy & Fitness. Inc. to crate images for their marketing use. I started doing some research and I notice all the image out there look like stock photos and did not stand out.  I decided I wanted to make the images for Esquea Yoga edgy and dramatic so they would stand out in the crowd.

I wasn't going to go into the shoot with the client and start experimenting this edgy, dramatic idea, that I had no idea what it would look like.  So I set up a test shoot with a friend to see how the image would come out.  We did the test shoot and I felt the images did not work for a commercial form, so I changed my idea to crating strong bright life style shots and making the portraits of Cinthya (Easquea Yoga's owner),  the edgy and dramatic images.

For the photographer out there I used a 6 feet shoot through umbrella on the right as key and I bounced a strobe with a small reflector off of the ceiling as fill at about 1/3 of a stop less than the key.  For the  portraits I used the 6 foot through umbrella on the right as key, just out of frame and a strobe with a large reflector with a gridded on the background.

Over all the images came out great; they're eye catching, and stand out from the rest of the yoga images out there.  Below are a few image from the test shoot, that I played around with and I think just look cool.

Collaboration with Jaclynn Kate for a fashion shoot

Back in March I had the chance to collaborate with Jackie Barry, an amazing make up and hair stylist, which is the owner of "Jaclynn Kate Hair & Makeup Artistry".  She had and idea of doing a very creative shoot with wild hear and make up and at a grungy fort with a ton of graffiti.  I really like what she had in mind so I told her "Get the models and lets shoot this thing!".

While outside, I really wanted the models to not get lost in the location and stand out from the overwhelming amount of graffiti.  So I used my 24mm-105mm Canon L lens at 105mm to make the background soft and get the separation I wanted.  I also crated separation with color by placing a full CTO gel and a half CTO gel on the beauty dish I was using and setting the color balance to tungsten.  This made the color of the light on the models warm and the light on everything behind them blue, which made them stand out even more.

Since it was March, it was really, really, I mean REALLY cold out so we head inside.  Inside I wanted to use a light with just a reflector to blast light through doors to crate direction of light and a bar-bulb light pointing at the ceiling as fill.  Then I placed the models in front of the shadow area of the wall behind them so the light and dark contrast would make them stand out in the scene.

I'm happy with what we ended up with and I hope you enjoy the images too.  You can also read my buddy and assistant for the day, Rob's account of the shoot at his blog.
